SR 11 from the Volusia County Line to US 1

This project involved the resurfacing of State Road (S.R.) 11 and the implementation of pedestrian enhancements from the Volusia County line to U.S. 1 in Bunnell, FL.

Project Overview

The purpose of this project was to improve roadway safety, pedestrian access, and infrastructure quality along a 15-mile stretch of S.R. 11. In addition to repaving, the project included upgrading pedestrian facilities and introducing new safety features to benefit all roadway users.

Project Leadership and Scope

Members of our team was responsible for designing the signals, lighting, and pedestrian improvements for this project. This included the integration of new pedestrian features, such as Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs) at mid-block crosswalks, to enhance visibility and safety for pedestrians crossing S.R. 11.

Design Features and Innovations

Our team led the design, which included:

  • Upgraded pedestrian crosswalks with RRFBs for improved visibility and motorist awareness

  • Installation of energy-efficient lighting to enhance safety during nighttime and adverse weather conditions

  • Design of widened sidewalks from 4 to 6 feet, where feasible, to improve accessibility

  • Development of a shared-use trail along the east side of S.R. 11 between Old Haw Creek Road and Bay Street

  • Elevated mid-block crosswalks designed to improve pedestrian visibility and encourage slower vehicle speeds

Coordination and Analysis

The design process included thorough coordination with FDOT and local stakeholders to ensure the enhancements met the needs of both pedestrians and drivers. Our team conducted traffic flow and safety analyses to identify optimal locations for the new pedestrian features and ensure their integration into the overall roadway design.

Enhanced Safety and Accessibility

The pedestrian improvements and resurfacing efforts significantly enhance safety and accessibility for pedestrians while improving traffic flow along S.R. 11. Features such as RRFBs and elevated crosswalks contribute to a safer and more user-friendly environment for all.
