US41 at I-275 Signalization Improvements

This project enhanced traffic management and pedestrian safety by installing mast arm signals at the I-275 ramp terminals with US 41.


Project Overview

The purpose of this project was to improve traffic flow and pedestrian safety at a critical intersection. The work included adding a new mast arm signal at the I-275 eastbound off-ramp and replacing an existing span wire signal at the westbound ramp with a more robust mast arm design. Signalized pedestrian crossings were introduced to facilitate safe movement, while pavement milling and resurfacing ensured alignment between road markings and sidewalks. The design also accommodated future shared-use paths on both sides of US 41, as outlined in the Future Sidewalk-Trail Concept Plans.


Project Leadership and Scope

Our team members served as the Project Manager and Signalization Engineer of Record for this   FDOT District One Design-build initiative, overseeing signalization improvements and pedestrian safety enhancements. The Design-Build process allowed close collaboration between design and construction, delivering cost-effective improvements quickly.


Design Features and Innovations

Our team led the design, which included:

  • Installation of two signalized pedestrian crossings to enhance visibility and encourage safe driving

  • Preliminary signal timings and Internally Illuminated Street Name Signs (IISNS) developed using Guidesign

  • Power system upgrades with load analysis and voltage drop calculations for reliable operation

  • Strategic placement of CCTV cameras in collaboration with the detection device manufacturer

  • Meticulous planning for a 78-foot mast arm in the northwest quadrant of the southbound ramp, ensuring effective drainage and structural integrity


Coordination and Analysis

Special attention was given to addressing traffic management deficiencies and optimizing safety measures. The project required careful planning to minimize disruptions during construction and deliver a robust, sustainable solution requiring minimal maintenance post-acceptance.
