US 17/92 Adaptive Signal System

This project involved the installation of a Traffic Adaptive Signal Control System on U.S. 17/92, extending from Monroe Road in Seminole County to Minnesota Avenue in Volusia County.


Project Leadership and Scope

Our team served as the Engineer of Record and Project Manager for these adaptive traffic signal system projects. The U.S. 17/92 corridor covered 15 intersections across Volusia and Seminole Counties, significantly expanding the region’s existing adaptive traffic signal infrastructure.


Design Features and Innovations

Our team led the design and implementation of advanced traffic management features, including:

  • Replacement of outdated traffic signal controllers with new, modern models and installation of adaptive traffic signal processors for adaptive operation.

  • Enhanced vehicle detection systems at all signalized intersections to provide real-time traffic data

  • Design and deployment of a fiber optic communication network to ensure fast and reliable data transmission

  • Solar-powered mid-block Bluetooth and Microwave Vehicle Detection sites, supported by custom-designed software using Python for energy calculations and system optimization


Coordination and Analysis

This project required extensive coordination among multiple agencies, including FDOT and local municipalities, to ensure the adaptive systems met regional needs. Our team also led the development of a comprehensive Systems Engineering Analysis prior to the design phase, establishing a cohesive framework to integrate all system components seamlessly. This analysis guided the design and implementation process, ensuring operational reliability and alignment with stakeholder objectives.


Adaptive traffic signal systems can significantly improve traffic flow, reduce congestion, and enhance roadway efficiency along U.S. 17/92. By leveraging advanced technology and thoughtful design, these projects exemplify our commitment to delivering innovative infrastructure solutions.
