This project involved the design and deployment of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) for a new section of the Suncoast Parkway (SR 589) in Citrus County, FL.
Project Overview
The purpose of this project was to enhance traffic management, safety, and operational efficiency along the new section of SR 589. The ITS design incorporated advanced technologies to facilitate real-time monitoring, improve traffic flow, and reduce incidents, contributing to a safer and more efficient roadway.
Project Leadership and Scope
Members of our team served as the ITS Engineer of Record for this project, overseeing the design and implementation of a comprehensive ITS framework to support both tolling and traffic management operations.
Design Features and Innovations
Our team led the design, which included:
Installation of a fiber optic network for reliable ITS and tolling communication
Deployment of CCTV cameras for remote monitoring from the Turnpike Transportation Management Center
Installation of Microwave Vehicle Detectors to monitor traffic flow and provide real-time data
Integration of Wrong Way Vehicle Detection Systems on off-ramps to detect and deter wrong-way drivers
Use of travel time sensors to monitor travel times along SR 589 and provide vehicular origin-destination data
Coordination and Analysis
To ensure consensus on user needs, system objectives, and operational requirements, a Concept of Operations was developed at the onset of the design phase. This document served as a foundation for the detailed ITS design, ensuring alignment with operational goals and stakeholder expectations. Close collaboration with the Turnpike Transportation Management Center and other stakeholders ensured that the ITS infrastructure met both current needs and future expansion requirements.
This project highlights our expertise in designing and implementing advanced ITS solutions that improve traffic safety and efficiency. For more information about this project and how our expertise can enhance your infrastructure, please contact us today!
