District 5 Regional Traffic Management Center

This project involved the design of the outside fiber plant for the new District 5 Regional Traffic Management Center (RTMC).

Project Overview

The purpose of this project was to provide reliable and redundant fiber connections for the new RTMC, ensuring seamless communication and data flow across Florida Department of Transportation’s (FDOT) District 5. The design included regional fiber network connections and physically redundant fiber paths entering the building. Extensive coordination was conducted with FDOT District 5 ITS staff, network engineers, and Seminole County to establish dependable fiber paths from the RTMC to existing communication hubs. The project also included the development of specifications to ensure that outside plant fiber materials met the network’s technical requirements.

Project Leadership and Scope

Our team served as the Engineer of Record for the fiber plant design, overseeing network reliability and redundancy for the RTMC.

Design Features and Innovations

Our team led the design, which included:

  • Regional fiber network connections with physically redundant entry points for enhanced reliability

  • Coordination with stakeholders to ensure seamless integration with existing communication hubs

  • Specification development to ensure that materials met stringent network requirements

State-of-the-Art Facility

Located in Seminole County, this hurricane-ready, 44,994-square-foot facility serves as the nerve center for traffic management across FDOT District 5’s nine counties. The high-tech headquarters houses over 100 traffic managers and staff members.

Advanced Monitoring Capabilities

The RTMC operates 24/7, monitoring highways and state roads with hundreds of highway camera feeds and thousands of live data streams from roadway sensors. Vast video screens enable real-time traffic management and coordination with first responders. The center oversees traffic operations and incident responses across 795 miles of highways and state roads in Central Florida.
