I-4 FRAME (CV RSU) Installation

This project involved the installation of connected vehicle (CV) roadside units (RSUs) along key limited-access highways and their detour routes, including I-75, I-4, SR 570, SR 91, I-275, and SR 60, as part of the I-4 FRAME initiative.

Project Overview

The purpose of this project was to enhance roadway communication systems and support connected vehicle technologies by deploying RSUs across strategic locations. The system enables real-time data exchange between vehicles and infrastructure, improving traffic management, safety, and efficiency along these corridors.

Project Leadership and Scope

Members of TRIUNE served as the ITS Engineers of Record for the RSU installation on limited-access facilities. Their responsibilities included overseeing the design and installation processes and ensuring the system aligned with FDOT’s connected vehicle goals.

Design Features and Innovations

The project included:

  • Field Assessments: Conducted reviews of existing ITS structures and cabinets to evaluate the feasibility of RSU installation, assess power and communication system impacts, and identify optimal RSU mounting heights and positions within FCC guidelines.

  • Detailed Installation Plans: Developed comprehensive RSU installation plans, wiring diagrams, and ITS cabinet specifications to ensure seamless integration.

  • Electrical Capacity Analyses: Performed evaluations to confirm sufficient power availability at existing ITS sites, ensuring reliable RSU operation.

  • Systems Engineering and Technical Provisions: Contributed to the development of Systems Engineering Documents and Technical Special Provisions to meet project standards and support connected vehicle applications.

Coordination and Analysis

The project required collaboration with FDOT to integrate RSUs into existing infrastructure effectively. The design process emphasized maximizing coverage and compliance with regulatory guidelines while ensuring minimal impact on existing power and communication systems.

Enhanced Connectivity and Traffic Management

By deploying RSUs along critical corridors, this project advances FDOT’s vision of a connected vehicle environment. The enhanced communication systems improve roadway safety, enable real-time traffic management, and pave the way for future connected and automated vehicle technologies.
